Understand your SASSA status result

Reviewed 7 October 2026

Tap the result you saw on the official SASSA portal. Each section explains what it generally means and your exact next step. Status is given per month — always note which month your result is for.

Pending — SASSA hasn’t decided yet

What it generally means: no decision has been finalised for that month. It is not a yes and not a no.

Next step: wait, keep the cellphone number you applied with active (SASSA sends feedback there), and check the portal again later. Do not submit a second application for the same month, and never pay anyone who promises to “speed it up” — SASSA’s services are free.

Approved — approved for that month

What it generally means: your application was approved for that month. Approval is month by month — one month’s approval doesn’t guarantee the next.

Next step: make sure SASSA has your correct banking details in your own name — if the details don’t belong to you, the system won’t verify the payment. Approval is not the same as payment: there is no fixed payment date, and regulations allow payment in a later period.

Declined — not approved for that month

What it generally means: your application was not approved for that month. Read the exact reason shown on the official portal — write it down word for word.

Next step: you have the right to appeal to the Department of Social Development’s Independent Tribunal within 90 days of the decision, for each declined month. Appeals are free and lodged on the electronic appeals platform — start from the official SRD portal, which links to it. Keep a record of every month you appeal and when.

Approved, but no money arrived

What it generally means: approval and payment are separate steps. Common causes: banking details not in your own name (the system won’t verify the payment), an outdated cellphone number, or the payment simply being scheduled for a later run — there is no fixed payment date.

Next step: confirm the month shows as approved on the official portal, check your banking details are in your own name, and make sure SASSA has your current cellphone number (update it via the toll-free call centre 0800 601 011). If months pass with no payment, contact SASSA directly. Never pay anyone to “release” your money.

A reason code or message I don’t understand

What it generally means: SASSA sometimes shows a short reason with your result (for example relating to income records, another grant, or identity verification). The exact wording matters — write it down exactly as shown on the official portal.

Next step: we don’t publish a list of reason codes because SASSA hasn’t published official definitions we could verify — any site listing “official” meanings is guessing. If the reason seems wrong for you, use your right to appeal within 90 days per declined month.

Where this comes from. Status meanings above are general guidance — SASSA hasn’t published official definitions of these words on the pages we could access. The appeal right and 90-day limit come from the SRD regulations (GN R.2042, reg 6); the “no fixed payment date” position and own-name banking rule come from official SASSA statements.
