Why Your SASSA Application Was Declined

Important: This is an independent informational website. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by SASSA or the South African government. We never ask for your ID number, cellphone number, or bank details.

"Declined" means your SRD application was not approved for that month. It is not permanent and it is not the end of the road. You have the right to appeal the SASSA decision to the Department of Social Development for each month your application was declined. Start by reading the reason shown on your record on the official portal, then follow the official appeal route.

What declined means

When the official SRD portal shows "declined" next to a month, SASSA made a decision: your application did not meet the requirements for that month. A decline is not a ban, and it does not block you from being approved in other months.

One month's decline says nothing about the next month. The SRD system checks each month separately. Many people are declined for one month and approved for another.

Please treat this as general guidance, not an official definition. SASSA has not published an official definition of "declined" on the pages we could access. The exact meaning of the status on your record is known only to SASSA.

Common reasons

SASSA has not published a list of decline reasons on the pages we could access. The points below are based on the published eligibility criteria. Only the official portal can tell you the reason shown on your own record.

  • Receiving another social grant for yourself. To qualify, you must not be receiving any other social grant for yourself.
  • UIF involvement. You must not be contributing to, or eligible for, Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) payments.
  • Other financial support. You must not be receiving financial support from another source.
  • Not meeting the "insufficient means" requirement. The SRD grant is for people with insufficient means.
  • Identity or application detail problems. If something on your record does not match, that can also lead to a decline. This is unverified — check the official portal for the reason shown on your record.

Ask yourself what changed. Did you start receiving another grant? Did you start a job with UIF? Did family support begin? Compare your situation honestly against the criteria above, then read the reason on your own status. For the full criteria, see our eligibility guide.

Your right to appeal

This is a verified fact: if your application is declined, you have the right to appeal the SASSA decision by lodging an appeal with the Department of Social Development for each month the application was declined.

The official SRD portal provides a "To lodge the appeal click here" link for this purpose. That link is the official entry point. Use it — never use an "appeals" link from a third-party site.

Two things we could not verify, so read carefully:

  • Appeal deadlines. We could not find any official deadline on the accessible pages. Do not trust third-party sites that quote deadlines. Appeal as soon as you can.
  • The appeals website address. The exact URL could not be verified. Start at the official SRD portal and follow its own appeal link.

For the full step-by-step process, see our appeal guide.

What to have ready

The exact fields for an appeal were not visible on the official pages we could access, so this is general guidance. Have the following ready before you start:

  • Your ID number.
  • The cellphone number you applied with — this is the number SASSA uses for feedback, so it must be active.
  • A list of the months that were declined, since you appeal each declined month separately.
  • The reason shown on your record for each declined month.

Enter these details only on the official portal at https://srd.sassa.gov.za. Never give them to a third-party site or to anyone offering to appeal on your behalf.

Reapplying vs appealing

These are two different things, and mixing them up can waste your time.

Appealing means asking the Department of Social Development to review a decision that was already made. You appeal a month that was declined. This is your right, and the official portal gives you a link for it.

Reapplying means submitting a new application. That does not change a decision that was already made for a past month. If your month was declined and you believe the decision was wrong, appealing is the right route — not applying again for the same month.

FAQs

Is declined final?

No. A declined month is a decision for that one month only. You can still be approved in other months. And for the declined month itself, you have the right to appeal to the Department of Social Development.

How do I find out why my application was declined?

Check the official portal at https://srd.sassa.gov.za. Only the official portal can show the reason on your own record. We cannot look it up for you.

Can I appeal every declined month?

Yes. You may lodge an appeal with the Department of Social Development for each month your application was declined. You appeal month by month.

Is there a deadline to appeal?

We could not verify any official appeal deadline on the accessible pages. Do not rely on deadlines quoted by third-party sites. The safe move is to appeal as soon as you can after a decline.

Does appealing cost money?

No. Appeals are free. Anyone charging a fee to lodge an appeal for you is a scammer.

Should I just apply again instead of appealing?

No — not for the same month. A new application does not undo a decline decision for a past month. If you believe the decision was wrong, appeal that month through the official route.

My details changed. Should I appeal?

First, fix what you can through official channels. If your cellphone number changed, call 0800 601 011 (toll-free) to update it. Then check the reason for the decline on the portal and decide whether an appeal makes sense. See what approved means for what happens when a month succeeds.

What to do next

1. Read the reason for the decline on the official portal.

2. Compare your situation honestly against the eligibility criteria.

3. Update your cellphone number via 0800 601 011 if it changed.

4. Lodge an appeal for each declined month through the official portal's appeal link.

5. Keep a record: which months you appealed and when.
