"Pending" means SASSA has not yet finalised a decision on your SRD application for that month. It is not an approval, and it is not a decline. In general, it means your application is still in the process. The next steps are simple: keep your cellphone number active, check the official portal again later, and never pay anyone who promises a faster result.
What pending means
When the official SRD portal shows "pending" next to a month, SASSA has not yet made a final decision for that month. Think of it as "still in progress" rather than "yes" or "no".
Please treat this as general guidance, not an official definition. SASSA has not published an official definition of "pending" on the pages we could access. Only SASSA knows the exact meaning of the status shown on your own record.
Why applications stay pending
SASSA has not published a list of reasons why applications stay pending on the pages we could access. So we will not guess at the specific checks behind your status.
In general, "pending" means work on your application is not finished. It can happen for new applications and for months where checks are still underway. Because SASSA has not published the details, we cannot tell you exactly which check is holding up your month. Anyone claiming to know the reason from outside the official portal is guessing.
How long pending lasts
We could not verify any official processing time or timeline on the accessible official pages. No time limit was published. So we will not give you a number of days or weeks to expect, because that would be inventing facts.
In practical terms, pending can be short or long, and only SASSA controls the timing. Check the official portal from time to time rather than every hour. If the wait feels long, call the official call centre instead of panicking.
What you should do
1. Keep your cellphone number active. SASSA sends application feedback to the mobile number you supplied when you applied. If your SIM is off or the number changed, you could miss messages about your application.
2. Update your number if it changed. If you have a new cellphone number, call 0800 601 011 (toll-free). That is the official route for updating the number where SASSA reaches you.
3. Check the official portal again later. Go to the official SRD portal at https://srd.sassa.gov.za and use its Application status section. That section is the official status-check route.
4. Check one month at a time. Decisions are made per month, so look at each month's status separately.
5. Make sure the details on the portal match yours. If something looks wrong, use only the official portal or the call centre to sort it out. Never give your personal details to a third-party site.
What NOT to do
- Do not submit the same application over and over. Repeated applications can create confusion and may delay things further. Work through the official portal instead.
- Do not pay anyone to "speed up" your application. SASSA's services are free. Anyone asking for a fee to move your application faster is a scammer. This is general safety advice.
- Do not share your ID number, OTP, or bank details with anyone who contacts you promising a quicker result. SASSA will not ask for these by phone or message to process your application faster.
- Do not trust third-party "status checker" sites. Only the official portal can show your real status. The SRD application collects banking information — deal with it only on the official portal or through the call centre.
When to contact SASSA
Contact SASSA through the official channels if:
- Your number changed and you need to update it — call 0800 601 011 (toll-free).
- Your status has been pending for a long time and you are worried — call the same number and ask for help.
- You see details on the portal that are wrong — use the official portal or the call centre to correct them.
Do not send your ID number or bank details to people who contact you first. Real help happens through the official portal and the official toll-free number. For more contact options, see our contact page.
FAQs
Is pending the same as declined?
No. Pending means no final decision has been made yet. Declined means a decision was made not to approve your application for that month. A pending month can still change. Read more about what declined means and what approved means.
Should I reapply if my status is pending?
Do not submit a new application just because your status says pending. A duplicate application can confuse the system. Wait, keep your cellphone active, and check the official portal again later.
Can I speed up a pending application?
No legitimate way exists to speed it up. SASSA's services are free, and nobody can push your application through faster. Anyone offering to do this for a fee is a scammer. For common questions about the whole process, see our FAQ page.
What if my status changes from pending to declined?
Then a decision was made for that month. Read the reason shown on the portal, and remember you have the right to appeal each declined month. See the declined status guide for the full picture.
What to do next
1. Keep the cellphone number you applied with switched on and active.
2. If your number changed, call 0800 601 011 (toll-free) to update it.
3. Check your status on the official portal's Application status section again in a few days.
4. If a month turns declined, read the appeal guide right away.
