The short answer
Most SRD problems are fixed through two official routes: the official portal at https://srd.sassa.gov.za and the toll-free call centre on 0800 601 011. Never fix a problem by giving your details to a third-party website or to someone who contacts you first.
Wrong cellphone number (update via 0800 601 011)
This is the most common problem, and thankfully it has a verified fix.
The problem: SASSA sends feedback on your application to the mobile number you supplied when you applied. If you lost your SIM, changed numbers, or typed the number wrong, you will miss every update SASSA sends — including payment notifications and status feedback.
The fix: Call the SASSA call centre on 0800 601 011 (toll-free; also shown as 0800 60 1011) and ask to update your mobile number. This is the verified official route published on the SRD portal.
What to have ready when you call:
- Your South African ID number.
- Your old cellphone number (the one on your application), if you remember it.
- Your new cellphone number — make sure the SIM is active in your phone before you call.
Tips to avoid this problem:
- Keep the number you applied with active, even if you get a new SIM for daily use.
- If your phone is stolen, update your number with SASSA as soon as you have a replacement.
ID verification issues
The problem: Your application may stall, sit at pending, or come back declined because something about your identity could not be verified — for example, the details you entered do not match your official ID record.
What we can verify: nothing about the official ID-verification procedure. We could not confirm how SASSA verifies identity or what the official fix is. Here is safe, general guidance:
1. Check your application status on the official portal. Open the Application status section at https://srd.sassa.gov.za and note the exact wording for the month in question.
2. Double-check what you entered. Compare the name, surname, and ID number on your application with your ID document, character by character. One mistyped digit breaks a match.
3. Call SASSA for your specific case. Phone 0800 601 011 and describe what the portal shows. The call centre can see your record — a website cannot.
4. Do not use third-party "verification" sites. Any site offering to "verify your ID for SASSA" is harvesting your details. Only official .gov.za websites are legitimate.
If your ID verification issue led to a decline, remember that a declined month can be appealed to the Department of Social Development. Read our appeal guide for the official route.
OTP / login problems
The problem: You cannot get into the portal to check your status or manage your application because the one-time PIN (OTP) never arrives, or the login keeps failing.
What we can verify: Nothing about the official OTP procedure. We could not confirm how the portal's OTP system works or how to reset it. So again: honest general guidance, and the official channels.
Try these safe steps:
1. Confirm your number is correct and active. The OTP goes to the cellphone number on your application. If that number is dead or changed, fix it first via 0800 601 011 (see above).
2. Check your signal and inbox. Make sure your phone has signal and your inbox is not full. Ask someone to send you a test SMS.
3. Wait and retry. Portal systems get busy — try again later rather than hammering resend.
4. Try a different browser or device. Sometimes the problem is the browser, not the OTP.
5. Call SASSA. If the OTP still does not arrive, phone 0800 601 011. They can check which number your OTPs are sent to.
Never do this:
- Never enter your OTP on any site except the official portal.
- Never share an OTP with someone who phones you claiming to be SASSA.
- Never use a "login help" service on social media. They want your OTP and ID number.
Bank detail problems
The problem: Payments are missing or failed because the banking information on your application is wrong, outdated, or points to a closed account.
What to do: We could not verify the official change procedure. Do this only through the official portal (https://srd.sassa.gov.za) or the call centre on 0800 601 011 — never through a third-party site or a person who messages you. Full guidance: How to Change Your SASSA Banking Details.
Portal will not load
The problem: The official portal sometimes fails to load or times out.
What to do: wait and try again at a quieter time; try a different browser or device; check your data connection; use 0800 601 011 as a fallback. Do not switch to a lookalike "status check" site — only srd.sassa.gov.za is verified as official.
Spotting scams
We could not access SASSA's official fraud advisory pages, so this is general safety advice, not quoted SASSA warnings.
Fake websites promise to "check your status" or "fix your application" if you enter your ID and cellphone number. No third-party website can check your status or fix your application — they collect your details for fraud. Only use official .gov.za websites.
Fake messages on WhatsApp, SMS, and social media promise approval or payment if you reply with personal details or pay a "release fee". SASSA's services are free. We could not verify any official SASSA WhatsApp number — treat any as fake.
Fake helpers phone or message offering to "sort out" your application or speed up payment. Never give banking details, OTPs, or PINs to someone who contacts you first — they can redirect your grant to themselves.
Golden rules: never share your PIN, OTP, ID number, or bank details with anyone who contacts you first. Only enter details on official .gov.za websites. If it asks for payment, it is a scam. When unsure, stop and call 0800 601 011 before acting.
