The short answer
The official requirements: 18 to 60 years old; a South African citizen, refugee, asylum seeker, or special permit holder; "insufficient means"; no other social grants for yourself; not contributing to or eligible for UIF; no financial support from any other source. We use the official words only — no rand figures, because none were verifiable on official pages.
The SRD grant is administered under section 32 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004, with the concurrence of the Minister of Finance.
Age requirement
You must be between 18 and 60 years old. This is a hard rule from the official portal.
- If you are under 18, you cannot apply in your own name.
- If you are 60 or older, the SRD grant is not for you. People 60 and above may qualify for the older persons grant instead.
Your age is checked against your ID record, so it must match your official identity document.
Citizenship and residency
You must be one of the following, with the status recorded in South Africa:
- A South African citizen.
- A refugee.
- An asylum seeker.
- A special permit holder.
If you do not fall into one of these four groups, you do not qualify. You must also supply a cellphone number where SASSA can send feedback on your application. If your number changes, update it via the toll-free call centre on 0800 601 011.
The means test (official wording)
The official wording is "insufficient means". That is the whole test as published on the official portal — two words, no rand figure attached on the pages we could check.
You will see many websites and posts claiming the means test is a specific monthly amount — the figure R624 is the most common. Let us be clear: we could not verify any rand figure on official SASSA pages. The number is widely repeated online, but "widely repeated" is not "official".
What does "insufficient means" mean in practice? SASSA decides each month whether you meet it — which is why some applicants are approved one month and declined the next. For the current test, ask on the official portal or the call centre on 0800 601 011.
Who does not qualify
Even if you meet the age and status rules, you do not qualify if any of these apply to you:
1. You receive other social grants for yourself. The wording is "for self" — the grant you hold in your own name is what counts.
2. You are contributing to UIF, or are eligible for UIF payments. If you pay into the Unemployment Insurance Fund, or could claim from it, you are out.
3. You have financial support from any other source. If you have another source of financial support, you do not meet the "insufficient means" requirement.
Be honest on your application. SASSA checks these conditions each month.
If your situation changes
Eligibility is not a one-time verdict. SASSA checks your situation every month, so your status can change in either direction:
- If you start working or receive support, you may no longer have "insufficient means". Last month's approval does not guarantee this month's.
- If you lose your income or support, a declined month can be followed by an approved one. Each month is judged on its own.
- If you are declined for a month, you can appeal that month's decision to the Department of Social Development. See our appeal guide.
FAQs
Can I apply if I am 61?
No. The SRD age range is 18 to 60. At 60 or older, look at the older persons grant.
What is the means test threshold?
The official wording is "insufficient means" — no rand figure was verifiable. Treat any number you see online as unconfirmed.
Can I get the SRD grant and the child support grant?
The official rule is no other social grants "for self" — for yourself. Grants you hold on someone else's behalf are a different matter. If you are unsure, ask the official call centre.
Do I need to upload documents when I apply?
No. Applications are electronic only and no documents need to be uploaded. Apply through the official portal.
I was approved before but declined this month. Why?
Eligibility is checked month by month. Your situation may have changed — or the check may be wrong, in which case you can appeal that month.
What to do next
1. Check yourself against the five official requirements above — age, status, means, no other grants for yourself, no UIF, no other support.
2. If you qualify, go to how to apply and apply through the official electronic channels.
3. Keep your cellphone number active — SASSA sends application feedback to it.
4. If you are declined for a month, read our appeal guide before taking action.
5. For anything unclear, call the toll-free call centre on 0800 601 011 or visit the FAQ page.
