The short answer
SRD applications are electronic only — no documents need to be uploaded. You apply through the official portal at https://srd.sassa.gov.za, supplying your ID details, a cellphone number where SASSA can reach you, and your banking information. Check you qualify first: aged 18 to 60, a citizen, refugee, asylum seeker or special permit holder, with "insufficient means", no other social grants for yourself, no UIF, and no other financial support.
Before you apply (eligibility)
Applying when you do not qualify wastes your time and SASSA's. Check yourself against the official requirements first — full detail is on our eligibility page. The SRD grant is administered under section 32 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004, with the concurrence of the Minister of Finance — and SASSA checks every application, every month.
How to apply (official electronic channels)
The official portal states that applications are electronic only and that no documents need to be uploaded. You do not queue at a SASSA office with paperwork. All information is provided electronically.
What to have ready: your South African ID number (name and surname exactly as on your ID), a cellphone number you control and keep active (SASSA sends feedback to it), and your banking information (where SASSA will pay the grant).
The application route:
1. Go to https://srd.sassa.gov.za — the only verified official SRD portal.
2. Find the application section and enter your details exactly as on your ID.
3. Supply your cellphone number and banking information when asked.
4. Submit and note any reference details the portal gives you.
Stay safe: apply only on the official portal — any other site collecting your ID and banking details is not official. Never pay anyone to apply for you; applying is free. Never let someone apply on your behalf — they can divert your grant.
After applying
Once you have applied, SASSA processes your application and gives you feedback via the cellphone number you supplied. This is why that number matters so much: if it is wrong, lost, or changed, you will hear nothing.
What to do while you wait:
- Keep your number active. If your number changes, update it by calling the toll-free call centre on 0800 601 011.
- Check your status. Use the Application status section on the official portal — see how to check your status.
- Check your bank account. If approved, the grant is paid to the banking information you supplied.
Reapplying
This needs careful handling, because there are two different situations and they have different routes.
If you were declined for a month: do not start a brand-new application. A declined applicant may appeal to the Department of Social Development for each declined month. The SRD portal provides a "To lodge the appeal click here" link. Appeal each declined month separately — see our appeal guide.
If your application itself failed or was never completed: then submitting it properly through the official portal is the fix — that is not an appeal.
If your situation changed after a decline: eligibility is checked month by month, so a later month can be approved even when an earlier one was not. Do not submit duplicate applications — keep one accurate application and use the appeal route for declines.
Cancelling
Honestly: we could not verify an official cancellation procedure on the official pages we could check. There is no confirmed set of steps we can give you.
What we can say:
- If your situation changes and you no longer qualify — for example, you start earning, receive UIF, or gain another source of financial support — you should not keep receiving a grant you are not entitled to.
- Handle this through official channels only: contact SASSA on the toll-free call centre at 0800 601 011 and explain that your situation has changed, or use the official services portal at https://services.sassa.gov.za/portal/r/sassa/sassa/home.
- Do not ask a third party to cancel for you, and do not use a non-official website for this.
We will update this section if an official cancellation procedure becomes verifiable.
FAQs
Can I apply at a SASSA office?
No — applications are electronic only, and no documents need to be uploaded.
Do I need to upload my ID or bank statement?
No. If a website asks you to upload documents "for SASSA", it is not official.
What if I do not have a bank account?
The application collects banking information so SASSA can pay the grant. We could not verify official alternatives. Call 0800 601 011 and ask about your situation.
I applied months ago and heard nothing. What now?
First check SASSA has your current cellphone number — feedback goes to the number you supplied. Then check your status on the official portal's Application status section. If the number changed, update it via 0800 601 011.
My application was declined. Should I apply again?
Not automatically. A decline is appealed, not re-applied. Appeal each declined month to the Department of Social Development. See our appeal guide.
What to do next
1. Confirm you meet the eligibility rules on our eligibility page.
